Shower Leaks

Shower leaks are common bathroom water leaks that can go unnoticed for quite some time, quietly causing water damage to your walls, floors, ceilings and joists. The gradual water damage caused by shower leaks can be bad for your health and your home’s structure.

Common Signs of a Shower Leak

Pooling water on the bathroom floor - If your shower has a sliding or hinged door, the seal can break, causing water to escape the shower and pool on the floor. This is generally a fairly simple issue to fix, by simply replacing the seal. Peeling Paint - When there is a leak in the plumbing system or valve, wetness spreads and can cause tile to loosen or paint to peel.  You might even notice this symptom on the level above the shower. Water Stains on Ceiling - Stand in the room directly below your shower and look up.  If you see ceiling stains, you could have a shower leak.

More About Shower Leaks

Mold and water damage can generally occur within 48 hours of exposure to moisture. So, it pays to pay attention to your plumbing and bathrooms to ensure you don’t have a water leak. Generally, shower leaks take place in the following areas: The Shower Door Frame - if the seal breaks, water can seep through the door frame, pool on the floor, or even get into the subfloor and affect other rooms in the house. Plumbing Joints - Plumbing components such as the pipes, joints and valves can loosen, crack or corrode causing a water leak. The leak takes place in the wall cavity where water accumulates but is unable to evaporate. Mold growth, wall and ceiling stains and rotted wood can result. The Shower Drain - Sometimes there can be a leak at the join in the drain pipe or the seal around the drain pipe. Shower Liner - There is a sealed liner underneath the shower that is designed to catch minor leaking. Sometimes, the shower liner will deteriorate. When this happens, water penetrates the subfloor and can cause damage. Water damage from shower leaks can be slow and hard to detect.
